Easy Houseplants For Beginners
Hello fellow #crazyplantlady! If you’re not to that status because you basically kill anything green you bring into your house keep reading. I love to add plants in our home as decor. Houseplants are also wonderful for purifying the air, so there are many beneficial reasons to bring plants into your home. I’m going to go over my favorite easy houseplants for beginners that (almost) anyone can keep alive and thriving. You will move past beginner and have a green thumb before you know it!

ZZ Plant
First we’ll start with my favorite easy plant the ZZ plant. I love the way this plant looks! They come in many different sizes. ZZ plants like pretty much any type of light except bright direct light. A bonus that makes them compatible with most homes is that it can thrive in low light situations! Water when the top 2” of soil is dry. ZZ plants like snake plants like to dry out well in between waterings. Soak it well and let it drain and you’ll be good to go for about 2-3 weeks depending on the season. It also is very forgiving if you forget to water it. Overwatering houseplants is the most common reason they die. We love our plants to death 🙂
Pothos Ivy
Next is the pothos ivy which is a vining plant and is my favorite for using as decor. It can be placed on a mantle, bookcase or open shelving and add the perfect homey feel to a space. It also thrives in low light with low water (see the common theme here?). This plant is also easy to propagate which means more free plants, score! I have many plants I have propagated from my main pothos. This plant tells me when it needs to be watered, usually every 1-2 weeks. The top leaves will begin to droop and that’s when I give it a good soaking and let the excess drain out. It perks back up within an hour which is so cool to see! My favorite variety is the pothos n’joy.
Snake Plant

A snake is the hands down the winner for easy houseplants for beginners! This plant is also often referred to as the mother law tongue. It is one of the best for indoor air purification making it fantastic to have in bedrooms and bathrooms. The snake plant requires little light and can basically hang out in a dark basement and probably be ok. It also doesn’t require frequent watering. I water these guys usually every 2-3 weeks, maybe even less in the winter. This plant comes in a variety of colors from dark forest green to yellow green.
Succulents
Let me start by saying while succulents can be easy they can also die easily if they get watered too often or don’t have enough light. Succulents have always been a challenge for me but are easy for a lot of people so they are making the list. They don’t require lot of care, but they are kind of picky about their environment than the other plants I’ve mentioned. Once they find their happy place they will thrive. They like bright, indirect light and infrequent watering making sure they are in a well draining pot. They hate to have their roots too wet.
Hoya
The hoya family has many variations of this plant but all are equally easy to care for. I have this plant hanging in a window since it is in the succulent family and loves lights of bright indirect light. I rarely water it. Caution, if you see stems without leaves starting to stick out of your plant don’t be alarmed. That is new growth! I thought it wasn’t doing well so I chopped the empty stems off! It’s always a learning process.
Fiddle Leaf Fig
Ok, I know a fiddle leaf fig typically wouldn’t go on a list of easy houseplants for beginners, but hear me out. I have had my big fiddle for 5 years, and a second one for 2 years. They have actually been one of my easiest plants to care for and they are thriving! I keep my fiddles in north facing windows. They like bright indirect light, not sun rays directly hitting the leaves. I also water once the first couple inches are dry when I stick my finger in the soil. I water until it comes out of the draining holes and then let it drink back up what it wants for about 30 minutes. Then I dump the excess water out of the tray. Fiddles do not like their “feet” wet, so do not let it sit in water. I also take it to the shower every couple months and soak it really well.

Philodendron
I have a Brasil Philodendron and it’s one of my favorites. It’s very similar to a pothos. It also likes to have the top 2″ dry before watering. It can do well in medium to bright indirect lights. I have read it can tolerate low light well but that hasn’t been the case for me. They tend to do better in my home in medium lighting conditions. They are a trailing and vining plant so look beautiful cascading off a shelf.
Fertilizer
I fertilize my indoor plants during their growing season once a month. I use Plant Vitamins except on my fiddles. Fiddles require a different nitrogen ratio than most other houseplants. You can use any specific fiddle leaf fig fertilizer. It is extremely important not to over fertilize your plants.
Plants can add an inviting, cozy feel to a home and I love having them all over. They are also decor that will fit almost any style. Most of the plants I mentioned are easy to find at any home and garden store or nursery and are inexpensive. I have recently purchased a few plants that are harder to find locally from Planterina. I have been very happy with my plants from there. So go buy a couple plants and get your green thumb on! If you have any favorite easy houseplants for beginners let me know in the comments!
